Monogramming etiquette tips

Monogramming Questions?  We hope this helps!

So, you have decided to take the leap and start personalizing gifts for your friends, family, and yes, even for yourself. Making sure you get the monograms right can be a little confusing, so lucky for you, we here at Point of Origin have put together a little “cheat sheet” for making sure you never commit a monogramming faux pas.

First let’s clear up the difference between a Traditional Monogram and a Block Monogram:

With a Traditional Monogram, the middle letter (the last name of the person) is LARGER and in the center.  It is flanked by two smaller letters representing the first name on the left and either the middle or maiden name on the right.  Traditioanl Monograms are usually used for women or couples. However, you can use this for a male – we would just suggest using a more masculine font. Here is an example of a monogram using our Interlocking Font:

Interlocking Monogram

With a Block Monogram all the letters are the SAME size.  Block Monograms are usually used for men.  However, you can most definitely use block monogrmas for women if that is what you would like to do!  We do not suggest block monograms for a married couple.  Here is an example of what a block monogram will look like using our times block font:

Times Block initials

Personalization for Women, Men and Couples (sharing a common last name):

Please note these are our suggestions.  You can do ANYTHING you wish!  If you want to use a monogram for a man – DO IT!  If you want to use initials for a woman – DO IT!  It is your gift to give!

Women’s Monogram: For most, the conventional personalization for woman is a monogram, consisting of three letters with a larger letter in the middle flanked by two smaller letters on each side. Traditionally, the larger middle letter is for the last name, the smaller letter on the left is for the first name and the smaller letter on the right is for either the middle name or maiden name. Check out our handy little example below:

Name: Jane Ann SmithMonogram: JSA

Now, if Jane got married to James Michael Bishop and she kept her maiden name as her middle name here’s what happens.

Name: Jane Smith Bishop

Monogram: JBS

Men’s Monogram: The traditional personalization for a man are his horizontal initials also known as a block monogram. Each letter is the same height and appear in the same order as the actual name – first name, middle name, last name.

Name: James Michael Bishop

Block Monogram: JMB (all letters being the same usually in a block font)

Couple’s Monogram:

This is where it starts getting a little tricky for a lot of people. Traditionally when the bride takes the groom’s last name, the monogram is Bride’s First Name, Common Last Name, Groom’s First Name. However, it is totally up to the bride and groom how they’d like their married initials to appear, so it is always good to check with the couple beforehand. If you are in a pinch, just monogram the last initial – it still looks great and they will have no clue how befuddled you were. Here’s an example or a traditional couple’s monogram:

Couple’s Name: Elizabeth A. Jones marries Davis C. Kelly

Blended Monogram: EKD

We get the question all the time, “If you just want to use a Single Initial which one do you use?”  Here are our answers:

The Single Letter Initial: Since we have monogrammed thousands of items over the years, we feel really comfortable suggesting when to use the first initial and when to use the last. Remember, these are just our suggestions – you’re the one giving the gift…

Jewelry, Handbags, Bath wraps and other accessories for Women: Use the first name of a woman if you are going to  monogram any of these items.

Glassware, Soap, or Candles: Use the last name or a woman, man or couple if you are planning to monogram with a single initial.

Stamps and Embossers: This one is tricky! For a woman, if you are putting a single initial, you can use either the first or last initial but we tend to lean more towards the first name initial. If the stamp is for a man or a couple, we suggest using the last name.

Towels: I bet you never knew these can get you into hot water! We suggest following the same rule that we mentioned for stamps. You can use either initial for a woman’s towel (using a single initial) with the first name being our preference. For a man, or couple, we think using the last name is more appropriate.

Now that we’ve helped navigate you through the murky waters of monogramming, personalize away!

Thank you Trollbead Fans!

I’m still recovering from our Trollbeads Trunk Show…Thursday, November 4th kicked off a weekend full of creativity, art, giving, sharing, laughs, and a few heartfelt tears.   My favorite moments were those shared with mother’s and daughters.   At one time, we had 3 sets of mom/dots surrounding the Trollbeads table.  It was so AWESOME!

Thank you to all who made TB purchases. Your generosity and love generated a cash donation of  $1200 to Mayberry Memorial.   Wahoo!!!

And what everyone has been waiting for….The winner of the $400 Trollbeads bracelet is Andrea Hodne.   Congratulations!

It’s Wassail Time!

Brrrr…it’s chilly out.  Perfect time to warm up to some hot Wassail.  A hot, spiced apple cider made with orange and lemen peel, nutmeg, cinnamon, and sugar.  Tastes great with apple juice, but you can also add a little extra zing to it by mixing it with hot cranberry or cran-apple juice.  And don’t forget the rum….yummmm!

Trollbeads: The Original since 1976

“Charm” has a whole new meaning.

The world of Trollbeads, Pandora Beads, Chamilla Beads and so on, is a fascinating one.  And since copy is the sincerest form of flattery, there are tons of European bead knockoffs.   However, there is a whole sub culture of women who just go wild at the thought of getting hold of a limited edition or brand new Trollbead! It been so much fun to see this trend grow, and learning the little intricacies surrounding these beads.  A common question we get in the store is   ‘What is the difference between Troll Beads and Pandora Beads?” Quite simply they are effectively the same thing,  except for the way that they attach to the specific bracelets.
Trollbeads are the more well known, and have been around longest. Both Troll charms and Pandora beads originated in Europe, in the same country–Denmark.   Trollbeads charms hit the scene in a small, modest way in 1976.  Pandora charms followed a little later, with the first charms being made in 1982.  Both types of bracelets and charms were hand made in small home workshops, and were sold locally at first to a small clientele. Both types of charms slowly became more popular, requests for specific designs were made by potential customers and thus the variety of beads|charms available grew.
Trollbeads and Pandora beads are now internationally popular and sold in many different countries worldwide.
Material the Beads are Made From: Both Pandora beads and Trollbeads are made from similar material, most commonly silver, gold and Murano glass.  Trollbead uses 18 karat gold, while Pandora is 14k.  Both type of beads are sometimes set with precious and semi-precious gems. Trollbeads also feature beads made from, or set with fresh water pearls. Variety of Charms On Sale: Trollbeads charms take their inspiration from mythology, astrology, fairy tales, fauna, flora, cultural diversity, and, as with the Pandora charms, from familiar things of everyday objects. Troll beads are a little more artsy in their design.  Each artist take great pride in their design, meaning and stories in the beads.  Make the line timeless and romantic…not trendy and cutesie.
Trollbeads bracelet is different in the sense that it is slightly thinner than an Pandora bead bracelet.  Trollbeads is a foxtail soghterless chain, which makes the bracelet stonger and moves easily.  (and no tiny hairs will be pulled out of your arms) This also means that you will NOT be able to fit your Trollbeads onto a Pandora bead bracelet. The core of the Trollbeads is smaller than those of Pandora.  Pandora beads on the other hand will  fit on to your Trollbeads bracelet.
There are over 500 interchangeable Trollbeads to choose from. New beads in intriguing shapes and colors continue to revitalize the collection. With an infinite number of combinations, the piece of jewelry you design will be completely unique and personal.  The possibilities are endless.
Join us for our Trollbeads Trunk Show   November 4th – 7th Trollbeads for a Cause – 10% of all Trollbeads sales on Thursday, November 4th will benefit Mayberry Memorial helping to find a cure for Lung Cancer with MD Anderson.

Jaime’s Pick: Trollbeads

It’s not a secret that I LOVE LOVE LOVE Trollbeads.

80005-tiger-eye-l

With the new Trollbeads release of the Autumn, 2010 beads there were 3 new stone Trollbeads added to the “Precious Stone” category. One of my favorite additions is the Tiger’s Eye.

Tiger’s eye (also called Tigers eye or Tiger eye) is a chatoyant gemstone that is usually a metamorphic rock that is a golden to red-brown color, with a silky luster.   Metamorphic rock is the result of the geological transformation of an existing rock type. “Metamorphic” means a changing in form. While deep in the earth’s crust the existing heat, pressure and chemical changes all contributed to the metamorphism.  Through millions of years of erosion and layers of uplifts the rocks are eventually.  Tiger’s Eye has beautiful lateral striations and depending on how the stone is finished, it can look like miniature landscapes.

Many legends say wearing tiger’s eye is beneficial for health and spiritual well being. Tigers Eye is also believed to be great for business and that it helps achieve clarity of thought. One Tiger Eye meaning assures the correct use of power, courage, grace and the ability to see clearly and without illusion.  All of which clears the way before you to allow your success to enter your life.

Another Tiger Eye meaning creates harmony in your life and is especially suited for anyone seeking peace and calm in their life. Does your mind flit from one thought to another, making it hard to concentrate, impossible to meditate? You should use Tiger Eye to ground yourself because Its presence stills the mind and helps you move deeper into meditation and into being a more calm person.

“Wow!” I say…those two meanings are speak to me.  I may have to make an entire bracelet of ALL Tiger Eye beads!

There are 3 new Precious Stone beads in the Autumn release.  Golden quartz, which is faceted and will give texture, warmth and  sparkle to your jewelry designs.  Chalcedony and Tigers Eye is in the smooth stone finish and the same size as the smooth version of the Rose Quartz bead.  All three new stone Trollbeads are such great additions to the Precious Stone group which like so many other reasons, places Trollbeads so far above any of the competing bead lines.

Hostess Gifts for Halloween

Deciding on what to give trick-or-treaters at Halloween is sometimes easy enough, but the planning doesn’t end there. If you’re like most adults, you’ve probably been invited to at least one or two costume parties. Don’t go empty handed. Below you’ll discover some great gift ideas for your host this Halloween.

Warm, Toasty, and Yummy

A mug with flavored coffee is a great idea….Snickerdoodle by Neighbors Coffee is my favorite.  Make sure you pick a seasonal flavor appropriate for autumn.  If your host isn’t a coffee drinker, Neighbors makes flavored hot chocolate, too.  Your beverage choices aren’t limited to coffee and hot chocolate, though.  A bottle of wine with one of our Witchy Wine covers makes a great gift.

We also love our Wind & Willow cheeseball and appetizer mixes. Paired with Halloween spreader, plate, or bowl….it makes a complete and thoughtful hostess gift.  Starting at just $10!

And remember – it’s the thought that counts. Party hosts are sure to appreciate any Halloween gifts given as a token of your appreciation of their efforts.
